A Comparative Study of Teacher Burnout among Primary, Junior High, and Senior High School Teachers

The present study was designed to investigate the differences of teacher burnout among primary, junior high, and senior high school teachers. The subjects for this study included 1077 school teachers, 434 from primary school, 383 from junior high school, and 260 from senior high school. They were administered a teacher burnout inventory. The data was analyzed by two-way multivariate analyses of variance. The main findings were as follows: 1. Junior high school teachers did have higher burnout levels of depersonalization and personal accomplishment than did primary school teachers. They aslso exhibited higher burnout levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization than did senior high school teachers. 2. Primary school teachers did have higher burnout levels of emotional exhaustion than did senior high school teachers. They experienced greater sense of personal accomplishment than did senior high school teachers. 3. Male teachers exhibited higher burnout levels of depersonalization than did female teachers.
