The work to revise the MMPI for the Chinese people, beginning in 1959, was completed in 1966. The main purpose of this revision was to make it a useful means of screening and selecting personnel for Chinese Navy, as well as a diagnostic aid for Chinese civil psychiatric cases.
Test records of 2,420 normal cases and criterion groups including 130 pathological cases, 331 prisoners and 518 problem behavior cases have been carefully analysed. The means and standard deviations were computed; and for both the normal group and the criterion groups, the frequency of responses for each of the 550 items was determined. All these data has been compared with the American norms provided by Dr. Hathaway and others; and significant differences between the two cultures have been found.
Based on this research, 2 new validity scales, L and F, and 12 new clinical scales, namely Anxiety, Hysteric, Paranoid, Schizophrenic, Homesich, Isolation, Depression, Work attitude, Sea-sickness, Sickliness, Anti-social and Violence, have been developed.
