A Study on the Interest Development of Chinese School Pupils
    Author:路君約 Chun-Yo Lu
Research Article

This is the short report of a three year accelerated longitudinal study (both cross section and longitudinal approach) on the interest development of Chinese school pupils. The subjects were 2111 youngsters (1063 males and 1048 females) sampled from two elementary schools and two junior high schools in Taipei area. A questionnaire consisting 17 sets of items was administered once a year for evaluating the school pupils in three fields such as school-related interests, recreational preferences, and personal and social interest. The major findings of the study were: (1) Interest in basic subject such as Chinese did not change with age, but steadily declined in interest in mathematics as children grow older. These results have educational implications that should be carefully considered. (2) Interest in extracurricular activities and technical subjects changed considerably during childhood and adolescence. To a greater extent than was anticipated similarities were found in the interest patterns of both sexes throughout the period of junior high school. Also differences between grade groups were not found to be significant. But as we study certain set of interests, perhaps the sex differences become apparent. There have been some confused conclusions drawn about the relation between interest and abilities, making it difficult to predict interest patterns from a information of educational achievement and intelligent level.
